Another Redesign

I had a little creative surge this morning, and what better outlet to release it than my website. That’s right, this entire layout is approximately two hours old and will hopefully last a little longer. I decided to go to a one column layout (although keep an eye on Garrett Dimon’s site for an opposite transition) because it still is all about the content and what better way to feature it than give the impression of a page.

Unfortunately, I still don’t do colors, but I did go out on a limb (by my standards) by using a light shade of gray! The inspiration for this new layout comes from sites like Niggle and Powazek that have brought their content to the forefront without discarding the essential blog features. Hopefully, this will inspire a little more interactivity and discussions.

Obviously, this design is far from finished and I will be adding and dropping features over the next few days. Who knows, maybe I’ll wake up with another surge and another layout tomorrow. Also, while the design looks dead sexy in Firefox, there are the expected IE quirks which I’ll be getting to soon. If you haven’t already just go ahead and get firefox.

Update: I somehow failed to notice it until now, but my site has been refeatured in CSS Mania, and a new gallery: CSS Nightingale.

  1. Nice! Would like to see the site name and menu back at the top, but other than that, no “complaints”. :)

I like the concept of sundries at the bottom, too. Been seeing it quite a bit since Powazek, but that must be because it’s such a great idea!

  2. What’s up with 9rules and those awkward ads? I’m willing to put up with most ads but something about those ads is depressing. It’s like you’re begging. It could just be me though.

  3. Again?! Good work as usual.

I like the content revolution that’s going on here. Everyone’s doing the whole focus-on-the-content design thing. Even me.

  4. I think the most recent previous design was much cleaner, actually. I do like the simplicity, but the gray kind of hurts my eyes. It might have something to do with a crappy laptop display, but I wager that’s only part of it.

  5. To Andrew
When you say “9rules” ads, are you referring to the 9rules logo at the very bottom of the page, or the eMiniMalls (the interactive ad)?

I’ve actually gotten an email from someone that likes them because they actually help instead of being simple, static ads.

    To Everyone Else

This layout is still in a very malleable state, and the website itself is – ultimately – yours…my dear readers. So if there are any changes that will make it easier for you to read or any additions that you would like to see, leave a comment and I will do my very best to accommodate them.

  6. I’m talking about the eMiniMalls. Something about it is clumsy. Maybe it’s just the current design of their ads. But honestly, I have no clue why I don’t like it. I’ll click google ads [be them relative] but not those.

... and I like the 9rules’ “ad”. Who could resist that logo?

  7. I don’t really need the money from them so I could take them off. However, what do you think about me leaving them up and donating all of it to charity? I’m making about 15-20 dollars a week and there are definitely people out there who could use it better than myself. Would it make them a little more tolerable if you knew that all of the earnings went to the Red Cross?

And yeah, the 9rules logo is gorgeous.

  8. I wonder if one minor adjustment might not be useful: a subtle and unobtrusive link at the top of the page to all the meta stuff at the bottom?

  9. That’s an interesting idea Daniel. I’ll start thinking of a good way to do it.

    Thanks for the tip :D

    How’s that?
