Blindsided

To those people that use their cell phones while driving, I hate you. One such moron targeted my vehicle this morning, and when I say targeted, I mean the driver literally aimed at my car. Needless to say, my baby was totaled in a fairly violent collision. I had no fantastic summary of my life flashing before my eyes, instead, all I got was my breath knocked out of me, the thick stench of airbag gases, and approximately 8000 bruises.

Just to add some fun to the wonderful event, I popped open my laptop and what do you know…poof. And my books, well, those were almost completely drenched in the hot chocolate I was taking to school with me. Other than that, things are just fine, thank you.

Update:
Well, I’m quite sore this morning, but everything (my limbs, for example) seems to be working.

The pound was closed, but I managed to snap a picture of the wreckage. I also found my glasses and am trying to recover info off my laptop.

Ouch!, I hear you man, but life is intact, everything else can be replaced, and you are still blogging :).

That would be the third accident I have heard in a span of 24 hours, first was my wife’s friend, then my sister, and now you—-and everyone walked away with no serious injuries!

I am really sore right now and can only imagine how I’ll feel tomorrow morning. Might have to go to the doctor to pick up some serious stuff :D

You’re volunteering to replace my laptop! How nice of you :)

    I hear that.

Well, at least you’re alive and well. Losing the car sucks, but that is what car insurance is for. I hope the cops ticketed the other driver at least.

Ah cellphone drivers. Sometimes I wish I was a monarch because then I might be able to actually change societies stupid habits.

Why are cellphones and driving not illegal? Your brain cannot think on two levels proficiently, regardless of what any cellphone-driver says.

Plus, look on the bright side, tommorow can’t possibly be worse can it? There you go, now you’ll have a great day tommorrow – at least in comparison.

I think I will volunteer to replace your laptop; here is how ( I am assuming it was in the car at the time of the accident)—-since it was in the car at the time of the accident, you should be able to claim that and your books with the insurance.

As for any data loss, I hope you have a backup.

Adrift: Taking a look at the car this morning, I could see that things could have been alot worse. I hope they ticket the guy too. The whole day was kind of a blur.

Eric: I think there is a law about it, but I’m not sure how well enforced it is.

KarmaDude: I was just talking with an insurance agent and they said that it wouldn’t be covered. Maybe this will be a good chance to finally buy that iBook I always wanted :D

Damn, that’s terrible. At least you weren’t seriously injured. People on their damn cellphones, I see them when I drive and curse them for their stupidity, but fortunately I’ve never been in an accident.

I know in some places there are laws about driving while using a cellphone but as you said I assume they aren’t enforced very well.

They better give that guy a massive ticket. Did you get his insurance info? Hopefully you’ll feel better soon man… Fuck!

I was just talking with an insurance agent and they said that it wouldn’t be covered

Things like laptop fall under property damage liability, and if the other persons insurance does not have that coverage, then the insurance agent might be right, but you might want to verify that.

    The car looks pretty bad.

You can see if their insurance will pay to replace it. Hopefully, they are insured. I would go after their insurance company to pay for anything damaged in the accident… It seems like the other driver is at fault.

Many states have hands-free laws concerning cellular phone usage now, and if the other driver was on the phone at the time of the accident, it is very likely that they will be found negligent in operation of their motor vehicle.

After all, their primary responsibility is to drive, and if they can’t handle being on a cell phone and driving at the same time, they should shut up and hang up or pull over.

To you driver with phone planted firmly in ear while driving, the only thing worse than your inadequate driving expertise is the distraction of that poor excuse for a skill by a useless conversation that would be better unsaid in the first place.

Sorry to hear about that. I’ve been there, although I didn’t suffer as much damage to myself or my car. Get better soon.

Dylan: Thanks a bunch. I’m slowly getting less angry and more grateful and it’s partly the result of these great comments.

KarmaDude: I’m still working on the laptop thing, but it seems that they (both of our insurance companies are the same) won’t cover damage to the contents or at least not under his current coverage.

Tarun: I didn’t think the collision was that serious until I saw the car this morning. It seems that the impact was closer to the middle than I had figured…almost too close o_O

    Adrift: Agreed!

jeremy: I love your site and its many looks.
Do you mind if I mail your comment to the other driver? :D

Atul: Thanks a bunch and I’m feeling better already.

To everyone, thank you for all the nice words (and not so nice ones aimed at the other driver). I’m sorry if posts drop a little but I’ll try my hardest to write up a few articles tomorrow for next week.

OUCH! Hope you get it all worked out OK and glad you were not seriously injured. How bad does it have to get before talking on cell phones while driving is outlawed. After a couple of close calls that could have been like yours, I quit. Won’t call, won’t answer when driving.

Thanks Winston. I just found out that New York (the state I’m living in) was the first to ban handheld cell phones while driving.

Unfortunately, the consequences are not terribly severe. The first violation results in only a $100 fine.

Hey thank you sir. I would love for you to send the message on. It irks me to see people driving recklessly because they are on the phone.

Thanks jeremy. I’m not sure what the conseqeunces might be of me sending that to them, so I’ll just think it really hard :D

Things are slowly getting back to normal. My notebook actually seems intact (other than the screen) but I still connected it to an external moniter and dumped everything to my server just in case. My ribs are slowly shifting back to their normal position and I’m starting to look for a new car.

Maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.
