Redesigns Out the Wazoo
This website has never taken a firm visual style, so frequent redesigns are a way to help me find it. This redesign seems much more free to me – the main content is not bound by any visual borders, and the light colors on the top give the layout a more airy feel.
I’ve also also created a portfolio section to help me organize and display the recent flood of projects I have received once they are completed. Also, the portfolio should help me better archive all the versions of my own site.
If you are exclusively a feed reader, I encourage you to drop by every now and then for a peek. Also, as always the final fate of the site’s design is in your hands; how can I change/improve this layout to make it better for you?
Watch a Live digg
After posting some screenshots of the influence of a front page digg, I’ve received a number of requests to open up the statistics program (Mint by Shaun Inman) to the public.
So, I’ve made a backup of the database because I’m not sure how it will handle alot of viewers and fired up the “Client Mode” for your viewing pleasure. Without further ado – enter Mint. Database problems, will reopen soon.
The Origin of Life
My previous article did little to describe the early earth that might have made “life” possible, so I will try to describe the situation a little better so that we have a better chance of describing the characteristics of life.
The accepted theory is based on a preparatory chemical evolution where small compounds with reduced carbon atoms were formed. These compounds reacted with the then volatile environment (catalyzed by clay) to form larger amino acids, sugars, and nitrogenous bases to create a prebiotic chemical “soup”. Eventually, large polymers of these compounds created the proteins and complex sugars we are familiar with today.
Life became possible when one of these large, complex molecules (most likely RNA) gained the ability to make a copy of itself. Thus, chemical evolution gave way to biological evolution.
Replication is certainly an important aspect of life because it creates two vital characteristics: selection (survival of the fittest) and ego, but is it what creates life?
